51. That vs Which
The words which and that mean essentially the same thing.
Which 와 That 은 근본적으로 같은 의미입니다.
But in context they are used differently.
그러나 문맥상으로는 서로 다르게 쓰입니다.
It is common practice to use which with nonrestrictive (nonessential) phrases and clauses and to use that with restrictive (essential) phrases and clauses.
Which 는 비 제한적(비 필수적) 구와 절에서 쓰이고 That 은 제한적(필수적) 구와 절에서 일반적으로 쓰입니다.
Nonrestrictive phrases are typically enclosed with commas, whereas restrictive phrases are never enclosed with commas.
비 제한적인 구에서는 코마를 찍고, 제한적인 구에서는 절대로 코마를 찍지 않습니다.
This treatment means that which appears in phrases set off by commas whereas that does not appear in phrases set off by commas.
그 말인즉 코마를 쓰는 구에는 Which 를 써도 되지만 That 은 쓸 수 없습니다.
The insect that has the shortest lifespan is the Mayfly.
수명이 가장 짧은 곤충은 하루살이입니다.
The Mayfly, which lives less than 24 hours, has the shortest lifespan of any insect.
하루를 넘기지 못하는 하루살이가 곤충중에서는 수명이 가장 짧습니다.
