The Little Gold Grammar Book (Subject-Verb Agreement, Rule 1-3)

목적이 있어서 영어공부를 시작합니다. 

책을 찾던중 '써먹는 영문법'의 리뷰를 읽게 되었고 그 책의 원서를 선택했습니다. 

구하기 복잡한 번역본대신 아이패드용 e-book을 샀습니다. 

사랑하는 연인들이 쓰는 것처럼 "오늘부터 하루!"라고 선포하고,

나는 오늘부터 이 책과 사랑에 빠지려고 합니다. 

 

1장 서두에 "It's not wise to violate the rules until you know how to observe them." -T.S. Eliot 

"규칙 지키는 법을 알기도 전에 그 규칙을 어기는 것은 현명하지 않습니다." 

내가 좋아하는 시인 엘리엇의 말입니다. 

그래서 그 규칙을 어떻게 지켜야 하는지 배워볼까 합니다. 

 

1장은 기본 문법을 40개의 규칙과 100개의 질문으로 구성되어 있는데 하루에 3개씩만 공부해보려고 합니다.

짧은 실력으로 번역을 하면서... 

그럼 시작해 보겠습니다.

 

Subject-Verb Agreement 주어-동사의 일치 

 

Rule 1: "And" always creates a compound subject.

"And"는 항상 복합 주어를 만듭니다. 

Q1: An office clerk and a machinist (was / were) present but unhurt by the on-site explosion.

한 명의 사무직원과 기술자가 현장에 있었지만 폭발로 인해 다치지 않았습니다. 

A1: An office clerk and a machinist were present but unhurt by the on-site explosion.

 

Rule 2: If two items joined by "and" are deemed to be a single unit, then the subject is considered singular, and a singular verb is required. 

두 아이템이 "and"로 합쳐져서 하나의 개체가 되면 단수로 간주하고 주어를 단수로 여겨 단수형 동사를 써야 합니다.   

Q2: Eggs and bacon (is / are) Tiffany's favorite breakfast. 

계란과 베이컨으로 만든 요리는 티파니가 좋아하는 아침식사입니다. 

A2: Eggs and bacon is Tiffany's favorite breakfast.

 

Rule 3: When the subject of a sentence consists of two items joined by "or, " the subject may either singular or plural. If the two items joined by "or" are both singular, then the suject and verb are singular. If the two items joined by "or" are both plural, then the subject and verb are plurel.  If one of the two items joined by "or" is singular and the other plural, the verb mathes the subject that comes after "or."

문장의 주어가 "or"로 연결된 두 개의 아이템일 때는 단수일 수도 있고 복수일 수도 있습니다.

두 주어가 단수이면 단수형을, 복수이면 복수형을 씁니다.

둘 중 하나가 단수이거나 복수이면 "or' 뒤에 오는 주어에 동사를 맞춥니다. 

Q3: In the game of chess, capturing one knight or three pawns (yields / yield) the same point value. 

체스게임에서는 기사 한 명이나 졸개 세 명을 잡는 것이 점수가 같습니다. 

A3: In the gane of chess, capturing one knight or three pawns yield the same point value.
